  • The first thing you will learn is how to confidently thread and troubleshoot your machine. From there, build your toolkit with popular seam finishes, easy to install zippers and handy hems. With small class sizes you will get the one-on-one attention you need plus the freedom to learn at your own pace.

    Designer, DDP Graduate

    Thomas Rowe moved from New Jersey to Philadelphia to pursue fashion design at Made Institute. After completing the Designer Development Program, he released his brand, Aeternum Clothing, presenting his work in New York City, Atlantic City, and Philadelphia Fashion Week. He is passionate about creating a more sustainable fashion industry by implementing up-cycling techniques and modular clothing designs in his work. “I’m very excited to start teaching, and to help new designers reach their full potential.”

    Melissa Delorenzo began dancing ballet and jazz at age 4, sparking her love for creative expression. After graduating from Mercer County Community College in 2009 with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, she pursued teaching dance, which allowed her to choreograph and design costumes, including 76 for the production of C.A.T.S., winning 1st place Best Costume at Nexstar Nationals. In 2014, Melissa moved to Maui, Hawaii, where she taught fitness dance and barre classes, while dancing professionally in Burn n’ Love. Upon returning to NJ, her fashion journey began when her mother gifted her a sewing machine, leading her to make ballet skirts and eventually graduate from Made Institute’s Designer Development Program. She launched her brand, oodelooo Ballet Wear, focused on creating quality knitwear for ballet enthusiasts of all ages, and is passionate about sharing her expertise in stretch sewing techniques with future designers.

    Being a Philadelphia native, Jaclyn is invested in seeing the local fashion industry regain the momentum it once had. Her career focus has been a “slow fashion” approach to luxury women’s clothing; working predominantly at small brands doing everything from patternmaking to hand-beading. Jaclyn is excited to be able to share her experience and teach people how to do the things she loves most.

    Emily Rose is a fashion designer who specializes in trans-focused lingerie and loves working with clients one-on-one. They attended Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

    Recommended:

    • 2-3 yards of muslin
    • 2 yards of light to medium weight denim
    • 8.5” x 11” Portfolio or Binder with Sheet Protectors
    • Sewing pins + Hand sewing needles
    • Seam ripper
    • 1 spool of black thread
    • Fabric shears
    • Pencil & notebook
    • Clear flexible ruler 2 x 18"
    • Two 2- 9" (or longer) Invisible zipper & two 2-9” Regular zipper
    • 120" of 2" wide webbing/strapping,  “Made at Made”, available for purchase in the studio. 

    • 22" zipper for duffel bag  (available for purchase at Made)

    FAQs

    Who is this course for?

    Anyone looking to learn a new skill! Our courses are designed for beginners as well as experienced designers, ages 13+. You should already have basic sewing skills or take our Sewing 1 course!

    What is the difference between West Philly and Center City courses?

    Sewing 1 and Beginner sewing courses are both great for those new to sewing! The big difference is the West Philly courses are taught on Singer Heavy Duty 4411 home machines and Center City is taught on Juki industrial machines. 

    What supplies do I have to buy?

    You will need a machine at home for homework. We recommend the Singer Heavy Duty 4411.

    I haven’t taken class with you, but am I an experienced sewist. Can I start with an advanced class?

    If you know your seams, hems, etc., we recommend becoming a Member and enrolling in a level 2 course. You can work on your personal projects and work in the studio throughout the week to re-familiarize yourself with the machine.

    Will there be homework?

    Yes, you will have assignments to work on at home throughout the courses. You can expect to have 1-2 hours of homework each week.

    Do I have access to the studio outside of class time?

    No, only Studio Members and Designer Development Program students have open studio access. Click to become a Member

    What is the Refund Policy?

    100% refund will be given if you need to cancel your order up until the original registration deadline. 50% refund will be given if you need to after the original registration deadline has passed, but before the first day of class. 0% refund will be given if you cancel on or after the first day of class.

    I started taking classes, but now want to join the program. Is that possible?

    Not for Beginner Sewing, only courses completed at our Center City location with passing grades will be counted as academic and financial credit towards the program and you will not have to retake them.
